Equipment needs:

4 Nets. Orange buckets, 4 Pylons for goals for centre ice orange bucket soccer game, Bike tires, !0 dog toy hotdogs, Blue pucks at least 1 per player

 Focus areas:

EARLY SKATERS – Skating, skating skating:
Our beginning skaters  aka “orange buckets” have really improved but is time to get them off those buckets. A reasonable goal is no buckets required in two weeks. Orange buckets will own the centre ice area between the blue lines.

Orange bucket warm up skate – Soccer with the buckets using pylons for nets ) placed well away from the boards)  and two balls across ice between the blue lines.

Rest of the practice on skating development led by Jonathan  in the area between the blue lines:

Buckets through zig zag course marked by bike tires

One hand on bucket moving in both directions around the stationary bucket

Bucket race around a circular course

Two skaters on one bucket (one hand each)

Walking the boards with one foot push both directions

Standing on skates without moving

Hockey stance on skates with eyes closed

Walking on skates

REMAINING SKATERS:

Focus will be on Tstarts, pivot or glide turns, receiving a pass, skating with a puck, shooting both forehand and backhand.

Warm up (UNDER 10 minutes) – Hotdog hockey with two nets (4 nets needed) – each team at their own end.

ALL IN Skating drills (each team to their own icing line)  (10+  minutes)

Remember the orange buckets are using the ice between the blue line so players cannot cross the blue lines.

Walk sideways to the blue line using a step and slide (Right foot out to the right, left foot slides over to be beside it – NO step over) and back  (1 time)

Walk sideways by crossing over your foot in front of the other one and back (1 time)

Lift one foot then the other to the blue line and back (2 times)

Fast as you can to the blue line and back (2 times)

Two knee fall and get up at the ringette line and back (No fall at blue line or boards) (2 times)

Skate the circles emphasize stepping over (both directions)

ALL FOUR SKILL DRILLS WILL BE DONE AS A TEAM IN THEIR OWN END (No more than 5 – 6 minutes per drill. It is critical to not stay too long on any one activity) All  four drills should take 25 minutes maximum.

1. PIVOT DRILL

LINE PLAYERS UP AROUND THE BOARDS SPREAD OUT AND AT LEAST 15 FEET OUT FROM THE BOARDS. PLACE A BLUE PUCK IN FRONT OF EACH PLAYER ABOUT 3 FEET FROM THE BOARDS.

Emphasize T start skate toward the puck and turn to the right around it without touching the puck or contacting the boards. Reset and repeat at least 5 times, Switch turn to the left and repeat 5 times

2. RECEIVING A PASS AND SHOOTING ON THE NET

Split team in half at their end

Players line up on the blue line with the first player at the boards, (2 lines = 7 or 8 skaters maximum)

2 nets set up on icing line opposite the centre of the faceoff circle

Instructor at dot of faceoff circle with pucks . Player skates down the boards receives pass and goes to the net to take a shot returning up the centre of the ice to avoid the drill on the other side and returns to the end of the line.

3. TAKING FOREHAND AND BACKHAND SHOTS

Players remain in the same line as they did in the previous drill. Instructor places three pucks 4 feet out in front of the net (one on each post and one in the middle) Player comes down the boards and crosses in front of the net shooting all three pucks into the net (WITHOUT TURNING THEIR BODY OR STOPPING) then goes up the centre of the ice  to the other line. In this way they will take three forehand shots on one side and backhands on the other.

4. STATIONARY PASSING TO A PARTNER

Pair up players and have them pass the puck from about 8 feet way. Encourage them to try forehand and backhand passes. Warning: This will be frustrating for most players.

IF TIME we will play two mini games across ice inside the blue lines  ( using two pucks)

This will require the movement of half of each team to the other end so the two teams have different jerseys.

NEXT WEEK END IS SUPER BUSY!

Weekly practice, team and individual photos before the practice and everyone go to a RAIDERS game at the Nepean Sportsplex on the Sunday – complete with one player on each team participating in a mini game between the second and third periods.
