FRIDAY FULL ICE GAMES

Posted: March 18, 2015 in Uncategorized

You asked for it and it is finally here!

Friday IP2 will have their first full ice games at Splex2.

Team bench reps will need to try to decide on “lines” and positions so when the players reach the ice they will know where they play. Our shifts will be 4 minutes long since (instead of 3)  I expect there to be delays with off sides and some early confusion about positioning.Full ice is large but I am hoping to keep on ice skaters to 5 plus a goalie. We may change that to balancing numbers at game time.

Two refs will run the game and extra parents will be needed to help maintain positions (NO STICKS REQUIRED).

IP2 Practice Outline Saturday March 21 Bell Arena 3:00 – 7:00

With this being the last weekend of March break our numbers are likely to still be a little low.

We have 3 practices left and it is important that we review all the essential skills that we want players to grasp before entering NOVICE : Skating with speed, agility , skating backwards with lateral movement, puck handling and shooting with power are the big five. It is also important that we begin the “goodbye” process making sure that they all know how impressed we are with their progress.

I also think the last three practices should be extra exciting and fun filled.

WARM UP: Skate with pucks

ALL IN:

  1. Fast as you can
  2. Apart together
  3. Alternating one knee touch at every line
  4. Fall and get up at every line
  5. Stop at every line
  6. Forward backward transition at every line

STATIONS: INSTRUCTORS WILL STAY WITH THEIR GROUP AND ROTATE WITH THEM

  1. One timer shot on net
  2. Two person race to shoot
  3. Backward skating with lateral movement (*cross over drill)
  4. Figure eight drill with tires
  5. Pylon skate with pucks
  6. Accurate passing
  7. One on none breakaway
  8. GOALIE TRAINING

WRAP UP: CHARIOT RACE

Karen Russell just informed me that our FUN DAY will be April 12 at Walter Baker starting at 9 and going until 6 pm.

I am working on the format this weekend and will let all teams know their schedule by this coming weekend March 15.

I just wanted parents to be able to mark the date on their calendar.

We will be trying to do something in the spirit of a FUN DAY. It will not be a regular looking game or practice format – that I can tell you right now….

SO MARK APRIL 12 ON YOUR CALENDAR!

One parent has made a good suggestion – that we introduce the official black pucks (a little heavier) than the blue pucks that are mandated by Hockey Canada for the Initiation program. The black pucks are used in Novice… something I personally wish didn’t happen. They are heavier than the blue pucks and their two biggest impacts are:

1. It is much harder to raise the puck when shooting on net

2. Passes have to be harder to get the puck to the player

We will use black pucks in our last two practices and I will set up an activity to allow players to see the difference between them.

I will also have  station working on faceoffs.

It is important to get our Timbits ready for their next hockey experience.

The last two games in IP2 will only have two teams scheduled so we can have a full ice game. Each will have their own dressing room. The idea is to get our graduating IP2 a little more familiar with what they will see in Novice next year. For the game we will ideally like to have TWO (and only two) parents from each team on the ice who will not need a stick since their main job will be to position players. There will be three instructors who will officiate the game.

1.Shifts will be 3 minutes long (stop time – not running time)

2. Six skaters + a goalie on ice

3. Offsides (with delay) called – icing will not be called

4. Penalties (rare???) will be called and will result in a penalty shot

5. Score will NOT be posted as per Hockey Canada guidelines

It will be exciting!!

Thanks to the instructors and parents who helped with the practices today. I really missed being on ice!!

I wish I could have postponed the surgery until after the season but as everyone knows surgery dates are not up to the patient. Nose is healing well and I will be on ice Wednesday for the mini games and for our TWO PRACTICES this coming weekend.

Yes…there are practices both Saturday and Sunday. Times for IP2 are currently incorrect on the Sunday but I have sent a memo to Karen and all IP2 parent reps with what I believe is the correct time.
